July is finally here, and now we’ve all calmed down after Glastonbury, it’s just about time to get riled up again – this time for Wimbledon. Most of us don’t lean into tennis for the rest of the year, but when Wimbledon season comes around, we can’t get enough. Call us Sue Barker, ‘cos we’re experts! If you fancy celebrating and putting your expertise to the test, here are some wonderful places in Manchester screening Wimbledon this year – why not make a day of it?
1. The Lawn Club
Providing a welcome city centre break, The Lawn Club will be showing Wimbledon on their big screens throughout the venue this summer – right up until July 16. Whether you’re just going for the Pimm’s and tennis, or fancy levelling up with a Wimbledon bottomless brunch, The Lawn Club is loving the festivities as much as us. Pretend you’re on Henman Hill and get in on the action! The Lawn Club, Hardman Square, Spinningfields, M3 3HG.
2. Freight Island
Freight Island has quickly become a favourite in Manchester, not just for drinks but street food, entertainment and of course watching sport. Freight Island will be screening both the men’s and women’s doubles and singles Wimbledon finals this year, on July 15 and 16, live from their sports bar. You’ll be able to order from any one of the bars and food vendors that bless Freight Island with their presence, so not the usual tennis grub, but you can most definitely get your hands on a prosecco or spritz if you’re feeling fancy. You can book for the Wimbledon finals here. Freight Island, Depot Mayfield, 11 Baring St, Manchester, M1 2PZ.
3. Society
Hidden food hall Society is the perfect chilled environment for a drink any night of the week, but for Wimbledon fortnight, it’s pulling out all of the stops. Tucked away just next to the Bridgewater Hall, Society is the perfect base to get your Wimbledon fix this year, with every match being screened for free on their massive screen.
There’ll be plenty of jugs of Pimm’s flowing, as well as a dessert special from Society’s Neapolitan pizza residents Noi Quattro who will be serving a special sweet treat for the occasion… Angioletti with Nutella: deep-fried dough bites with sugar served with Nutella and hazelnut crumble. Society, Basement, 100 Barbirolli Square, Manchester, M2 3BD.
4. The Director’s Box
As a sports bar, The Director’s Box is well-versed at hosting anticipated matches, and now it’s packed Wimbledon into its busy schedule. Only interrupted by huge games of cricket, rugby and the British Grand Prix, Wimbledon will be shown every day until the finals in the wonderfully casual Manchester surrounds where you can let your hair down and put away a couple of pints easily.
The Director’s Box will be serving its usual menu of classic pub grub and ridiculous sharing platters, so you can keep yourself topped up all day long, along with the tennis. You can book a table here. The Director’s Box, 37 Booth St, Manchester, M2 4AA.
