As we know, Stockport is on the up and up – with plenty of new developments and a thriving town centre. Now, developer Capital&Centric, custodians of the historic Weir Mill, have released new images of the town’s newest hot spot for local foodies and revellers, and of course, it’s in an iconic location.
Chances are, when you think of Stockport, you think of the viaduct that dwarfs everything beneath it, and that’s a key design factor in the brand new Weir Mill development. Set against the backdrop of the town’s iconic railway viaduct, the new public square at Weir Mill, dubbed Weaver’s Square, will soon become the go-to venue for live music, street food pop-ups, parties and al fresco eats under the arches.

What are the plans for the Weir Mill development in Stockport?
The new neighbourhood will feature plenty of independent food and drink options, with 10 new bars, restaurants and cafés spilling outside and bringing the social spaces to life.
Weaver’s Square will be the beating heart of the community, featuring four characterful outdoor spaces totalling a whopping 65,000 sq ft. The new plant-packed outdoor areas will stitch into the fabric of Stockport town centre and bring people together day and night.

The spaces will bring a mix of vibes as they include a riverside terrace which will become an evening sun trap perfect for drinks with water views. A central courtyard will provide a lush, green oasis tucked away from the town bustle, whilst the sunken courtyard will be an intimate, hidden nook with tonnes of personality.
John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said: “Weir Mill isn’t your bog-standard development.
“Whether it’s live music under the iconic viaduct arches, grabbing food with mates or stumbling across the latest pop-up, it’s the kind of neighbourhood that feels buzzing, alive and full of character. With the first food and drink operators set to be announced soon, it’s about to get really exciting.”
Cllr Micheala Meikle, Stockport Council cabinet member for economy, skills and regeneration, said: “Our UK-leading town centre regeneration is about more than building new homes, it’s about creating vibrant neighbourhoods and breathing new life into Stockport’s heritage, giving our historic buildings a future.
“While the Grade-II listed former mill is being carefully restored for residents, the new public square will create opportunities for independent businesses to thrive and for people from across the borough to come and enjoy our buzzing town centre.”

What else is happening in Stockport?

As usual, there’s a lot going on. In the vicinity of Weir Mill, the Stockport 8 development is at the heart of the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC)’s masterplan to transform the ‘Town Centre West’ (TCW) into the UK’s most sustainable, liveable town centre and is a key part of the wider £1 billion investment currently being delivered.
Alongside this, the big news for Stockport is the proposed Metrolink tram line that will link up to the town’s new interchange. TfGM’s strategic outline case – the first step in the process – is exploring a ‘core’ extension from the existing Metrolink stop at East Didsbury to Stockport town centre, connecting thousands of residents to the city centre and beyond via tram.
