The Capital of the North is not just an epicentre for punk rock, Britpop and Britfunk. It is also a thriving city when it comes to jazz, boasting both intimate bars and big clubs like Matt & Phreds Jazz Club, La Gitane and The Blues Kitchen. Beyond these spots, there’s Manchester Jazz Festival that is dedicated to keeping the genre fresh, and the upcoming “We call it Jazz” show in Manchester, celebrating the spirit of jazz with sensational performances by a Mancunian jazz band.
On selected dates over the coming months, the multi-award-winning live music venue Band on the Wall will be transformed into a street-style bar. With soft lighting and iconic melodies, including Louis Armstrong’s “When the Saints Go Marching In” and Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island”, the historic venue located between the Northern Quarter and Ancoats will resemble the smoky bars of the 1920s. There is limited availability though and tickets are known to sell quickly, so secure yours now.

Jazz, its story and the show
Jazz is a genre born from the cultural melting pot of New Orleans, combining African, European, and Caribbean influences. It emerged from blues and ragtime, characterised by improvisation and syncopation.
At “We call it Jazz”, seasoned musicians bring to life iconic songs like “But Not For Me”, “Ain’t Misbehavin'” and “Georgia On My Mind” alongside thrilling improvisations and solos that capture the genre at its core. The experience is designed to transport you to the heart of New Orleans, where jazz was born. With a drink in hand and the soft glow of a street lamp setting the mood, you’re immersed in a world of soulful melodies and spontaneous rhythms.
Art Blakey once said that “jazz washes away the dust of everyday life”. If you too like Art are looking for an escape, head to Band on the Wall to immerse yourself in some good jazz.
“We call it Jazz” offers two performances each evening, at 19:00 and 21:00, giving you the chance to grab a pre-show drink or a post-concert bite. Doors open 45 minutes before the start of the show and late entry is not permitted.
