There’s just something about the North West. Home to arguably the friendliest Northerners in existence and Vimto, the North West is a place where true icons are born. Icons that include internationally loved fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood.
Born and bred on the catwalks of Glossop, Vivienne Westwood was a pioneer of punk fashion back in the 1970’s, when the designer carved out her soon-to-be iconic tartan and chain-clad signature style (a style that remained iconic for the five decades that followed), so it’s no surprise that the locals of Glossop want to pay homage to their Fashion Queen.
Leaving a legacy behind that is championed by celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Kim Kardashian and, of course, Sarah Jessica Parker as iconic SATC character Carrie Bradshaw (that wedding dress tho đ), Vivienne Westwood will be remembered with a ‘Wander Walk’ this weekend, where wanderers will explore Glossop and the local spots that were significant to Westwood’s life.
Fashion lovers are invited to join a group walking tour led by culture expert Martha Camarillo from Glossop Creates, who’ll be guiding Westwood fans through the town. The Vivienne Westwood walking tour will showcase where the designer grew up, the sources of inspiration around her, and even talking through how she went on to become the global icon that she is remembered as today.
Naturally, due to the very stylish nature of the tour, participants are encouraged to wear their ‘most eccentric’ outfits (in honour of our Viv’), and there’ll even be a fun catwalk at the end in memory of the late designer – who sadly passed away in December last year.
Fans will also get to see the incredible mural of Vivienne Westwood that stands proudly in the town, created by talented local artist, Deggy, just last summer.
Martha Camarillo said: “Vivienne Westwoodâs persona has always intrigued me. She had the ability to transform herself and others.
“Itâs all about her; a life filled with intensity and stimulating stories, a woman who always saw beyond what the eye sees. Someone who always wanted to find the heart of the matter and channelled her actions and ideas to the next level with her characteristic passion and her strong, sharp temperament.”
The 1.5-hour walking tour dedicated to Vivienne Westwood takes place this Saturday 13th May at 3pm in Glossop, just a 30-minute train ride away from Central Manchester. Get tickets here.
