When you buy things from a shop or online, there’s a general understanding that what you are purchasing is safe to use – assuming you follow any necessary precautions. But by and large, we often don’t think about whether or not something is safe; if it’s in a store, we assume it’s fine! And that’s mostly true! However, from time to time, issues arise, and a product may prove to be dangerous to the general public. In these cases, product recalls can be issued.
This September, there were 20 product recalls in the UK. Some of the products in question pose a serious risk to the general public.
What is a product recall?
The Office for Product Safety & Standards, which is part of the UK Government’s Department for Business and Trade, is responsible for ensuring that products purchased in the UK are safe to use. If they become aware of an issue, they may issue a product recall.
A product recall may be put in place for “specific products that have been sold in the UK and may require you to act to receive a free replacement, repair or refund from the manufacturer or a retailer.”

A product recall is one of 3 different types of alerts that can be issued regarding product safety. If a product presents a risk to health and safety, an alert can be issued. These are:
- Product recalls
- Product safety reports
- Product safety alerts
