The Trafford Centre has unveiled a new bee mural to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack. The permanent installation inside the Greater Manchester shopping centre is titled Art for MCR and features hundreds of bee artworks contributed by individuals from around the world, forming a collective visual tribute to the victims, survivors, and all those affected by the tragedy.
The bee mural in the Trafford Centre was curated by the One Love Manchester Project, which was set up by a team of people affected by the Manchester Arena attack, passionate about bringing awareness to the events of May 22, 2017.
The mural honours the spirit of resilience, unity and compassion that emerged in the wake of the attack. It also aims to raise awareness of vital resources, including support services for trauma recovery and terrorism prevention.
Simon Layton, Centre Director at Trafford Centre, said: “This mural is a moving tribute to the memory of those lost and the strength of the Manchester community. We are honoured to provide a permanent space within Trafford Centre where people can reflect, remember, and find hope. The bee remains a powerful symbol of our city’s unity, and this piece encapsulates that spirit beautifully.”
Lyric Holmes, Founder of One Love Manchester Project, added: “The ‘Art for MCR’ mural is made up of individual contributions from across the globe, showing how far-reaching the love and support for Manchester truly is. Each bee represents a voice, a heart, a commitment to never forget. We hope this space offers comfort and connection to all those impacted, and a reminder that healing is possible.”
The mural is now on permanent display in The Orient food court (opposite Nando’s) and open to the public. For more information about therapy and support services, or to learn how to contribute to the One Love Manchester Project, visit their website here.
