The shorter, darker days are here, and whether you’re a Halloween nut or just prefer the cosy things in life, there’s something to look forward to this season. Unique exhibitions, live music series and festive light trails are set to take our minds off the grey, wet months, bringing Manchester right back into its own – even if it rains more here than anywhere else in the country.
Autumn is the time to hunker down, keep warm and enjoy what the Danes would call ‘hygge‘ – so grab that blanket, light those candles and get ready to embrace the season and all its warm colours, despite the lack of sunlight. Here are the best things to do in Manchester this autumn.

For an autumn night out with a darker edge, a new stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, adapted by Stef Smith, tours the UK in 2026 and plays at Palace Theatre Manchester from 27–31 October 2026. The production promises a theatrical, suspenseful retelling following the hit Netflix series, perfect in the run-up to Halloween.

Luke Jerram’s seven-metre Museum of the Moon will be exhibited at Campfield Studios in Manchester from 22 October to 8 November 2026, featuring NASA lunar imagery, an original surround-sound score, and free tickets.
Over its lifetime, the Museum of the Moon has been and will be presented in a number of different ways both indoors and outdoors, so altering the experience and interpretation of the artwork. As it travels from place to place, it gathers new musical compositions and an ongoing collection of personal responses, stories and mythologies, as well as highlighting the latest moon science.

For a spooky-season pick that’s also perfect for families, step into Halloween Town as you explore a moonlit trail of dazzling lights and iconic characters. Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Light Trail has transformed Arley Hall & Gardens into a 1.2-mile, multi-sensory walkthrough featuring over 1,700 light installations, 3D sculptures and scenes from the film. Open in the UK for the very first time, the bewitching experience is suitable for all ages.
