The love for Manchester’s dining scene just keeps coming as this month sees another of the city’s hospitality venues make its way into the Michelin Guide – and this time, it’s a proper pub. Earlier this year, Northern Quarter bar Trof was given a new lease of life and was reborn as The Trof – a classic pub with refurbished interiors and a new dining room menu. And after less than four months since it reopened, The Trof has become one of the Inspectors latest additions to the Michelin Guide.
The Trof on Thomas Street has a long and storied history in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Dating back to the 1880s, the red-brick building was opened as a neighbourhood bar in the early 2000s by Adelaide Winter and Joel Wilkinson, who own Firehouse, Ramona, and Albert’s Schloss, before it was purchased from Mission Mars by Matt Nellany in 2022.
Having worked together for several years, Matt joined forces with Jamie Pickles at Trof in 2023 before launching Stow, the open-fire restaurant on Manchester’s Bridge Street that also features in the Michelin Guide.
Commenting on the accolade on social media, The Trof posted about the achievement saying, “To think that our little pub on the corner of the Northern Quarter has made it in to the Michelin Guide – makes today a very special day! This ones for the whole team. Up The Trof.”
What did the Michelin Guide say about The Trof in Manchester?
In its listing, the Michelin Guide said: “From its name alone, you could guess that there’s a no-nonsense approach to this red-brick pub in the city’s bustling Northern Quarter.” The inspectors described The Trof as “a welcoming spot where the ground-floor pub is ideal for a pint and a snack, while the upstairs dining room is the setting for mightily appealing British dishes that come with full-force flavour.”
The Michelin Guide praised menu items such as the ox cheek pie with mash and an intense beef sauce, describing it as an example of the kind of hearty cooking to expect. The restaurant guide also gave a shout out to The Trof’s version of a Bakewell tart, which gives a nod to the the chef-owner Jamie Pickle’s Peak District roots.
