The Stamford Christmas lights switch-on
The main event everyone looks forward to is their legendary Christmas lights switch-on. It’s a huge deal for the Bowdon community—they host it completely free of charge—and this year marks the seventh time they’ve put on this massive spectacle. It’s guaranteed to wow the crowds with genuine Christmas cheer, and they even get a full choir out there to officially kick off the festive season – which this year kicked off in late November.
What other festive fun goes on at The Stamford?
Pub owner Nicholas Theaker is clearly committed to the Christmas magic, adding new festive touches every single year. In 2023, for example, he brought in a brand new sleigh and extra light-up reindeers for the exterior display.
Step inside, and the decor is just as grand: the pub boasts a dozen beautifully decorated Christmas trees, plus you’ll find a singing Santa right there in the bar! They also host wholesome activities like wreath-making workshops that are perfect for the whole family to enjoy together.

On top of the festive fun, in previous years The Stamford has had a Christmas tree shop set up outside, thanks to a local gardener. Punters could grab a freshly cut tree daily from late November right up until the week before Christmas—though carrying one home after a couple of pints sounds like a fun challenge!

New for 2025, The Stamford has hoisted a toasty tipi so punters can enjoy proper good grub and drink whatever the weather, all day and night. Not only does it provide extra cover, from 12-9pm daily you can grab artisan pizza made on the premises in the tipi, and there’s plenty of mulled wine to go around!

The Christmas tipi is available for walk-ins only, so even if you miss out on a table inside the cosy pub itself, you won’t go home without a festive treat.

Naturally, even when it’s not the festive season, The Stamford is famous for its fantastic food. They always offer a menu of fresh food on their à la carte menu, along with daily lunch specials. On Sundays, their set-price menu is a massive crowd-pleaser, featuring those famous, mouth-watering mixed-meat roasts. And, of course, they roll out a dedicated Christmas menu when the time comes.
