We don’t need to tell you, Manchester is an absolute goldmine for pubs. Old, new, big, small, themed, live music spots – you name it, we’ve got it. Now, The Head of Steam has announced that it will be bringing its celebrated craft beer brand to Manchester city centre for the first time later this year, marking an exciting new chapter for one of the UK’s original craft beer pioneers.
Set to open in the former Cottonopolis and Lamb of Tartary site at 16 Newton Street, right on the edge of Manchester’s Northern Quarter. The new venue will mark The Head of Steam’s 16th location nationwide, and its first new opening since the award-winning Leeds Park Row in 2019.

Established in 1995, The Head of Steam is part of Camerons Brewery, one of the UK’s largest family-owned independent breweries, and is known for its inclusive, innovative approach to craft beer. The brand has already built a loyal following across its 15 venues in 13 cities, from Newcastle to Cardiff, including its popular Didsbury location, which has been a firm local favourite since opening in 2018.
The new 2,800 sq ft venue will hold 180 guests, with seating for 120, and will be designed to showcase the brand’s trademark mix of industrial character and Northern warmth. A striking circular central bar will take centre stage, surrounded by exposed brickwork and restored original features – a nod to Manchester’s proud industrial past and creative spirit.

True to its history and ethos of making craft beer accessible, relevant and fun, The Head of Steam will showcase an extensive and diverse range of beers, featuring 30 lines serving 24 keg and six cask brews. Expertly selected beers from the UK craft scene will complement a vast collection of Belgian beers synonymous with The Head Of Steam brand, alongside a rotating selection of cans and bottles.
Completing the offering will be a fresh cocktail menu and quality spirits range that’s every bit as considered. Designed with after-work socialising and weekend catch-ups in mind, guests can also look forward to augmented reality darts, live sports across six screens, and a dedicated pop-up kitchen from a local operator, also making its debut in Manchester city centre.

Mark Connor, Head of Operations & Brand for The Head of Steam, said: “We’re excited to be joining the Northern Quarter community and to bring our favourite UK brewers, alongside classics from our extensive Belgian range, to this vibrant part of the city. The location is incredible, and being able to offer something new and exciting to the area is fantastic for us. We can’t wait to open our doors later this year, meet our neighbours, and become a part of this iconic area of Manchester.”
The Head of Steam will bring its renowned craft beer, welcoming atmosphere, and unique character to 16 Newton Street in the Northern Quarter later this year, with more details, including the local food operator, to be announced soon.
