The year 2023 sees some highly-anticipated new openings but sadly the new year has not started with quite the excitement we hoped as less than a week into January one Manchester bar has shockingly announced it will be closing its doors this weekend. What has been considered a must-visit to kickstart a night out as well as being home to the ‘Unicorn Juice Cocktail’, The Font right near Manchester Oxford Road station will be calling last orders for the final time today (January 7).
The bar, which opened in 2000, is particularly popular with students thanks to its bargain cocktails sold for as little as £3, stated the reason for the closure was due to the rising cost of living as well as the ongoing impact of the pandemic. This closure is not the first from The Font as one of its other bars on Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield had to close its doors back in 2018, however their other venue on Manchester Road in Chorlton will remain open.
Announcing the news on social media on Friday evening (January 6), The Font Manchester said: “Farewell Font Manchester. With sorrowful hearts we regret to announce The Font Manchester is closing for business… Unfortunately the impact of COVID, followed by the cost of living crisis has taken an insurmountable toll and while this is tough news for sure, we feel comforted by the memories of the last 22 years and the countless awesome times we’ve had here!”
Located on New Wakefield Street, in the shadow of Manchester Oxford Road station, The Font notably serves up fun and exciting cocktails, many of which are inspired by popular childhood sweets from Jelly Tots to Flying Saucers. Other favourites on The Font’s drinks menu included cocktails such as Vimto Margarita, Jammie Dodger, Mermaid Lemonade and Candy Floss Cosmo.
The Font’s last day will be Saturday 7th January 2023, open from 4pm to 1am, and for customers with any remaining credit on their app this can still be spent at The Font in Chorlton, which will remain open.
