Quite proudly, Manchester has developed quite the cafe culture, and with so many incredible bakeries, coffee shops and artisan spots around, we’re really spoilt for choice. One of these many bakeries is homegrown spot The Flat Baker, and aside from its pistachio croissants, it’s famous around these parts for its sweet little hatch; but now the operation is expanding with the announcement of a dedicated Flat Baker dine-in cafe and brunch spot, just one building over.
In an Instagram post, Matt and Deb, owners of The Flat Baker, said: “This corner in Ancoats will never be the same again, because… it will be our NEW BAKERY Cafe & Brunch!

“We have been dreaming with it for years… We almost closed a deal with another 2 locations in the past few years, but it didn’t work out. We were about to leave the plan of the new shop aside… We were very frustrated of how things were not working the way we planned it to.
“But everything happens for a reason! Who knew the building next door was just waiting for us… This 2 story building has just the right space for our baking operations. A sitting area and a space to serve hot food.
“We may also have space for small events, functions… Imagine a morning birthday celebration at your fav bakery! We have many plans for this space.”
Thrilled as most fans will be, many may wonder what will happen with the beloved hatch on Radium Street in Ancoats, and Matt and Deb have an answer for that too: “Don’t worry, we won’t let our tiny hatch go, we will keep both locations. This will allow us a faster service, avoid the wait times and long queues.”
It’s truly wonderful so see a local business thriving in Manchester, and as Thee Flat Baker owners say, “Growing a small business when you see many other places shutting is such a challenge.” This little corner of Ancoats is becoming ever more popular, and this cult bakery is no doubt the main reason.
There has been no timescale announced for the opening of The Flat Baker Cafe & Brunch, but we’ll be sure to keep you up to date.
