The group behind The Botanist bars has announced that another site will be closing its doors, this time being one in the Greater Manchester region. New World Trading Group (NWTC) confirmed the closure of The Botanist in Media City, Salford Quays today (January 15), which would see the bar shuttered immediately.
The bar owners have issued a statement claiming that the closure is the result of a landlord decision to seek new tenants as part of the Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) process. Last week, the group also closed The Botanist sites in Sheffield and Coventry as well as North Light restaurant in Chester, amid an ongoing company restructure.
The Botanist is well-known for its plant-themed interiors, botanical cocktails and their infamous hanging kebabs that have experienced some seasonal twists over the years. Although an immediate closure has been confirmed for The Botanist in Media City, bosses have said that it will continue to operate 27 other sites across the UK, including The Oast House in Spinningfields, which is part of the hospitality group.
A spokesperson for NWTC said: “We are hugely disappointed with this outcome. Despite our desire to retain the site, the landlord has decided to bring in new tenants at the site of The Botanist, Media City. We are truly grateful to our loyal guests and team in Manchester and the community that has supported us over the years.”
The closure comes as part of a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) approved in October by its creditors to clear debts over a set period. In that same month, the original Botanist in Alderley Edge, which opened back in 2012, plus its Knutsford site, both closed their doors.
The final date of trading for The Botanist Media City is today (Wednesday 15th January), however the bar group still plans to convert The Furnace in Sheffield to The Botanist in February 2025, and open a new Botanist site in Bournemouth in May 2025.
The Botanist’s huge bar and restaurant site on Deansgate quietly closed last summer and was replaced by Simmons and its Didsbury site shuttered in February 2023.
