What’s your dream job? Running a nice bookshop on the seafront? Shaking cocktails at a beach bar in Australia? Performing to thousands of adoring fans on the big stage? Well, a dream job has come to our attention right here in Manchester, and it’s changed our minds immediately. Ahead of its new pie menu launch later this month, Stables Tavern in St John’s is inviting Manchester pie lovers to apply to become one of only a handful of official pie-testers.

If you have a passion for proper pub pies – crisp pastry, serious gravy and flavoursome fillings – this one’s for you. The job involves taking part in a special blind tasting to help crown the ultimate upper crust crowd favourite and to determine if these are Manchester’s best pies.
Selected pie enthusiasts will be invited to a blind tasting at Stables Tavern on Wednesday 18th February, between 5–7pm, where they’ll sample a selection of the gastropub’s new homemade pies, share their feedback and help decide which one’s top of the Tav’s ‘pie chart‘, and if these are indeed the best pies in the city. There will also be mash, greens and gravy (and yes, pints) involved.
Pie-testers will be selected based on their application – explaining why they should be one of the chosen few – and will be able to bring a guest with them for the tasting session. As you can imagine, this isn’t a full-time job, and will in fact last just those two hours – but think of the pie you can try and pints you could sink…
Stables Tavern pie menu

The new homemade pie menu at Stables Tavern, which launches on February 23rd, will feature such delights as:
- Beef & Barley – rich Guinness gravy, root vegetables, beef jus, and woody herbs
- Chicken & Leek – creamed onions, nutmeg, and lovage
- Pork & Apple – braised shoulder, Cornish Orchards Gold Cider and wholegrain mustard
- Root & Lentil (Ve) – earthy vegetables, forest mushrooms, and fresh marjoram
What do you get as compensation for being a pie-tester?
Alongside sampling the new pies, mash, greens, gravy (and pints), you’ll get a +1 to keep you company, and selected guests will receive a £20 voucher to spend on pies and pints.
