Manchester’s newest city centre urban park at St Catherine’s Wood will open to the public this month (Friday 24 July), welcoming the first park completion as part of the landmark Victoria North regeneration programme.
The redevelopment of St Catherine’s Wood has transformed and reimagined the historic wooded green space that has been underused for decades as a new green heart to the once-in-a-generation investment at Red Bank.
Eventually, the regeneration promises uninterrupted green travel from Collyhurst, through Sandhills and Vauxhall Gardens to the city centre via St Catherine’s Wood along a 40-hectare City River Park.
The regeneration is part of the development of the Red Bank area, within Victoria North, transforming what was once England’s deadliest slum into an interconnected, functional corridor through the north east of the city.
St Catherine’s Wood new urban park opening
From 11am on Friday 24 July, the local community will be invited into the park for the first time to take part in a range of activities and events, including workshops, music, food, face painting and a fun nature trail through Manchester’s latest park.
Victoria North regeneration
The Victoria North regeneration programme is a long-term partnership between Manchester City Council and FEC that will see up to 15,000 new homes built between Victoria Train Station and Queen’s Park in Collyhurst over the next 15 years in seven new and existing neighbourhoods across 155 hectares.
Each neighbourhood will be linked by high-quality green spaces that will open up and celebrate the River Irk, with St Catherine’s Wood being the first park to open as part of the redevelopment.
