The month of March has arrived which means spring is here… or is it? Just as we debate putting our winter coat away, meteorologists have reported that temperatures are expected to plummet across the UK, including the Greater Manchester region, with a possibility of snow.
Forecasters have reported that temperatures are set to drop considerably over the coming weekend with the mercury dipping to well below freezing from Tuesday (March 7). Plus, flurries of the white stuff could potentially fall over the region as the temperatures fall.
According to the Met Office between March 6 and 15, this period is “expected to be characterised by winds from the north bringing cold conditions to most areas”. Northern and eastern areas are likely to expect wintry showers which could turn to “more organised bands of snow” at times.
The meteorologists reported that England had its driest February in 30 years but it seems the dry weather will not continue into March. The Met Office said: “During the later part of the period confidence decreases significantly, however there is a risk of some milder and wetter weather pushing into the south from the Atlantic, meaning spells of rain will become more likely across the country. Temperatures overall will be below average but may gradually trend up through the period.”
From March 7, the people of Manchester can expect highs of 6°C and lows of -1°C with a chance of snow. Maps on Met Desk’s WX Charts show how snow will fall over the country, with snow expected to fall in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday over Greater Manchester. Snowfall could be heavy over some parts of the region, with snow falling at 2cm per hour in some areas.
The map then shows that snow could fall again over our region around Wednesday (March 8) lunchtime, hitting the higher areas of Greater Manchester. Snow showers may even continue into the following week, with some light snow set to fall over Greater Manchester on the evening of March 13.
