It has been announced that Ruben Amorim has “departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United”. The news comes as speculation around Amorim’s future reached fever pitch, with rumours swirling about his growing frustration with the hierarchy of the club, according to commentators.
With Manchester United currently sitting sixth in the Premier League table, sources say that there hasn’t been sufficient evidence of progress under Amorim’s leadership, resulting in him being sacked 14 months into the job. Amorim leaves with the worst win rate in the Premier League of any permanent boss, at just 31.9%.
Manchester United official club statement
Manchester United has released the following official statement: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
What happens from here?
As laid out in the official statement, Under-18s head coach and former player Darren Fletcher will take charge of Wednesday’s game with Burnley.
After that, as with any high profile Premier League club, plenty of names are floating around to take over the Head Coach position from Ruben Amorim. The likes of former Barcelona manager Xavi, the seemingly volatile Enzo Maresca who walked out on his club Chelsea just days ago on New Year’s Day, and even our beloved former England player and manager Gareth Southgate, have all been mentioned since the news came in.
