As the summer holidays draw to a close and the back-to-school countdown begins, finding a family day out that’s genuinely fun and doesn’t send your bank balance into a tailspin can feel like a minor miracle.
Luckily, one Greater Manchester green space has just been crowned the North West’s best-value attraction for families.

According to new research from outdoor retailer GO Outdoors, RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford is the region’s most “cost-effective” family activity, taking first place with a perfect overall score of 10 out of 10.
The study analysed UK search volume, Google review scores, visitor numbers and admission prices for attractions across the North West.
Bridgewater came out on top, ahead of beloved local spots including Dunham Massey, Speke Hall and Jodrell Bank.

Set across more than 150 acres, RHS Garden Bridgewater is one of the UK’s largest gardening projects and makes for a wonderfully low-key alternative to the usual expensive summer-holiday activities.
A family of four can visit for £46.40, with access to its many gardens, wide-open spaces and child-friendly features included in the price.
It’s not just a place for plant enthusiasts, either. Little ones can let loose in the woodland play area, get messy in mud kitchens and seek out fairy houses, while adults can take things at a slightly more leisurely pace among the planting displays.
Highlights include the enormous Weston Walled Garden, one of the largest publicly accessible walled gardens in the UK and the peaceful Chinese Streamside Garden.
Whether you’re packing a picnic, taking a buggy-friendly stroll or simply trying to tire the kids out before dinner, it’s a pretty solid plan for a final summer-holiday outing.
The attraction welcomed 579,010 visitors in 2025, achieved a Google review score of 4.6 out of five, and recorded 844,000 UK searches that year, according to GO Outdoors’ analysis.

Dunham Massey follows closely behind
Coming in second was Dunham Massey in Altrincham, where a family of four can visit for £50. The National Trust site is known for its 300-acre deer park, home to roaming fallow deer, ancient trees and accessible walking routes.
Families can also explore the historic house, wander through formal gardens and admire the rose garden in its summer bloom. It’s the sort of place where you can easily spend a few hours — or make a full day of it, if the children are happy to follow the deer.
Speke Hall, on the outskirts of Liverpool, secured third spot. The striking Tudor house sits beside the River Mersey and pairs heritage with spacious gardens, picnic potential, a café and a second-hand bookshop for a slower-paced family day out.
