With the festive season around the corner, nothing captures the magic quite like taking the family to meet Father Christmas—and you won’t need to travel far. Before he heads back to Lapland to check his lists and pack the sleigh, Santa is making several stops across the North West, with plenty of appearances in Manchester so the kids can share their wish lists in person. From cosy grottos to magical train rides, here is our pick of the best places to meet Father Christmas in and around Manchester this winter.

You can meet Father Christmas on the platform of the Science and Industry Museum’s historic Power Hall in Manchester. Families can walk past illuminated steam locomotives and twinkling light displays for a photo opportunity and a personal meeting with Santa and his elf. Each child receives an age-tailored gift, plus access to drop-in winter crafting sessions and interactive science demonstrations exploring light and snowflakes. The event also features Victorian-costumed carol singers on November 21 and December 23, alongside 20% off at the museum café and 10% off in the shop for ticket holders.

The Grotto moves to the Corn Exchange for its upcoming season, offering a Manchester city centre location to meet Father Christmas at. The event is an immersive winter wonderland and Santa experience, where families step inside a magical festive story brought to life. Journey through a series of enchanting rooms, meet joyful elves and take on festive missions along the way, before the adventure leads to the moment everyone’s been waiting for… meeting Santa himself. Whispering Winter sessions are also available exclusively for children with Special Educational Needs and those on the autism spectrum, with the sounds of The Grotto gently muted and fewer guests per slot.
Reddish Vale Farm is hosting its interactive festive walkthrough this winter. Families pick up a North Pole passport at Passport Control, test the Naughty or Nice Machine, and pass through a portal into the Elf Workshop. Children build a teddy bear to take home, mix reindeer dust in the stables, decorate sweet treats alongside Mrs Claus, and visit the Holly Jolly Gum Drops sweet shop. The route also features marshmallow toasting by the fire, festive song sessions around the Christmas tree, warm drinks at the Elf Bucks Express, and a personal meeting with Father Christmas, where kids receive a token coin to exchange for a gift in the toy shop.

The East Lancashire Railway brings back its Santa Specials for an 80-minute steam train ride through the Irwell Valley to Rawtenstall and back. The experience starts with a walk through the decorated Bury Station to meet characters like the Ice Princess, Mrs Claus, and the elves. On board, a traditional brass band plays carols as families receive mince pies, a festive tipple for adults, and a visit from Santa. Every child receives an age-appropriate gift and an activity book, and a British Sign Language interpreter is available on select dates.

Cockfields Farm is hosting its annual Christmas walkthrough, giving kids the chance to meet Father Christmas in his grotto and pick out a present from the Elves’ Toy Shop. The route also includes a stop at the North Pole Post Office to write letters, gingerbread decorating with Mrs. Claus, and a station to make reindeer food. Outside the grotto, families can toast marshmallows around the fire pit, take a ride on the Santa Express tractor, and meet the animals in the Christmas Barn. The event also features a new ice-skating rink and fairground rides.

LaplandUK is bringing its festive experience back to two locations: the original Ascot site and Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire for Lapland Manchester. The four-and-a-half-hour journey guides families through the Enchanted Forest and into a recreated Elven World. Children help assemble toys in the Toy Factory, decorate gingerbread in Mother Christmas’ Kitchen, and explore the Elven Village before walking through the snowy forest for a personal meeting with Father Christmas.
