If you know New Century, you probably know it for the food and the live music.
The restored Manchester venue, now a key part of the regenerated NOMA district, has quickly become one of the city’s most talked-about spots — not just for its line-up of street food traders, but for its rich musical heritage. Originally opened in the 1960s, the space has been brought back to life with its iconic sprung dancefloor and a state-of-the-art sound system that’s hosted everyone from emerging artists to big-name acts since reopening, and legends such as Jimi Hendrix and The Kinks back in the day.
It’s a venue built for and on atmosphere, with the energy of the night-into-day Acid House raves of 80s MADchester still reverberating through its foundations. That same energy has spilled over into its food hall, where independent traders, £10 lunch deals, bottomless brunches, and regular happy hours — think £3.50 Guinness and £6 Spritz — give it a constant buzz. Whether you’re there for a quick bite or settling in for the evening, New Century always delivers, but now, it’s switching things up.

For two nights only New Century is dialling things in a different direction, extending its usual food hall buzz for a wine experience that’s deliberately low on pretension. An Idiot’s Guide to Wine is exactly what it sounds like, a relaxed, no-pressure way to get to grips with what you’re actually drinking.
The brainchild of Australian comedian Merrick Watts, the only comedian in the world to possess a WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) level 3 qualification, this experience promises laughs by the glass. Six thoughtfully selected wines guide the evening, and as you sip during the 75 minutes, a stand-up comedian shares everything you need to know, pairing genuinely useful insights with plenty of laughs along the way. An adults only experience, it’s the perfect excuse to escape the kids and shake up your usual plans — whether that’s a date night with a twist or a lively night out with friends.
So if New Century has been on your list (or even if it hasn’t yet), this feels like a pretty good way in. And if you come away knowing your go-to wine order isn’t just “whatever’s easiest”? Even better.
