Is this even news anymore? Rumours of a Peaky Blinders movie have been swirling since before the final series was broadcast. Back then, Stephen Knight originally said it would begin filming in 2023, while this March updated us and said it’d start later this autumn. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth,” he said.
As fans of the beloved series – following the criminal exploits of the Shelby family in the aftermath of the First World War – well know, however, talk can be cheap. But finally, we have some real confirmation. Netflix has shared an image of the script and said, “Tommy Shelby returns.”
There are no major new details revealed that we couldn’t’ve guessed though. It’s written by Stephen Knight, stars Cillian Murphy and is directed by long-time Peaky Blinders collaborator, Tom Harper – who worked on the Series 1 finale, as well as other movies like Wild Rose in 2019 and last year’s Heart of Stone, starring Gal Gadot.
Cillian Murphy said: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
It’s expected that filming will commence in Birmingham this September. All we know about the plot, so far, is that the new film will build towards the Second World War. This is believed to be the end of Tommy Shelby’s story, but with two spin-off TV shows in the works at Netflix, it’s not the end of the Peaky Blinders. One would be set in Boston, while another would follow Polly.
Premiering on BBC Two in 2013, with the last two seasons on BBC One, Peaky Blinders became a global phenomenon when Netflix picked up the series for worldwide distribution shortly after. It won’t just be Brits in three-piece suits and newsboy caps tuning in, but the whole planet when the Peaky Blinders movie finally streams.
