Familiar with the drawer or cupboard of doom? We all have one. It’s the final resting place for flickering lamps, temperamental toasters, and jeans with a stubborn zip. In a world of disposable everything, the bin often feels like the only option. But what if there was another way? A way that saves your wallet, helps the planet, and connects you with your neighbours over a proper brew.
NEPHRA Repair Cafe is more than just a cup of tea
Every month, a group of volunteers with a knack for fixing things gathers to breathe new life into broken belongings. On the second Friday of every month, from 10 am to 12 pm, the NEPHRA Good Neighbours Community Cafe in New Moston, Manchester, becomes a hub for mending and meeting. Run by the local organisation NEPHRA, the primary mission is to combat social isolation by giving people a real reason to get out and connect.

People bring in all sorts of items that would otherwise be destined for landfill: quiet CD players, faulty hair straighteners, and even cherished ceramic clocks. Textile experts are on hand to mend a torn leather jacket or patch up a hole in a pair of trousers. The best part? All the repairs are carried out completely free of charge. While you wait, you can grab a cup of tea or coffee and even a cooked breakfast, sit at a table, and have a chat.

Fixing gadgets and fighting loneliness
This initiative perfectly marries practicality with compassion and it’s a powerful tool against our throwaway society, giving perfectly good items a second chance. But more importantly, it creates a warm, welcoming environment where people find companionship and conversation. It’s an idea that strengthens local ties, one repair at a time.

The cafe is located on Parkfield Road, around 30 minutes from the city centre, and is a short walk from Failsworth tram stop. So, if you have a wobbly gadget or clothing in need of some TLC, head down to the NEPHRA Repair Cafe to see this fantastic local spirit for yourself. You might get that old kettle working again and even leave with a few new friends, too.
