A huge, six-metre replica of the moon is heading to a stunning 400-acre parkland just south of Manchester this autumn. Created by renowned UK artist Luke Jerram, the extraordinary artwork, known as Museum of the Moon, will be displayed in the Glasshouse at Alderley Park in the parkland from September 1, 2025.
The Museum of the Moon will be free to view at Alderley Park near Macclesfield (just a 50-minute drive from Manchester city centre) and observe throughout the month. The end of the installation will be celebrated with the family science and tech event, SciTech Extravaganza, returning for its second year on September 20, 2025, at the 150,000 sq ft innovation hub.
What is Museum of the Moon?
Measuring six metres in diameter, the moon sculpture by Luke Jerram features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface.
The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition from the award-winning composer Dan Jones. Museum of the Moon offers a unique and ever-evolving viewer experience, with interpretations of the artwork shifting depending on where it is presented.
Luke Jerram is also known for suspended installations such as Floating Earth, Gaia, Helios and Mars, as well as light display First Breath, which took place ahead of the launch of Factory International in Manchester.
When can I see Museum of the Moon at Alderley Park?
Museum of the Moon will be available to view in Alderley Park for free between September 1 and 19 2025, giving everyone a chance to experience the breathtaking installation and explore the moon like never before, suspended in the heart of Cheshire’s innovation campus.
