Manchester United Football Club has announced the appointment of Rúben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team. The news follows the dismissal of Erik ten Hag as manager earlier this week following a 2-1 defeat against West Ham United.
Announcing the news on social media, Manchester United said: “It’s done. Bem-vindo ao Manchester United, Ruben Amorim.” He will join Manchester United until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club.
Rúben Amorim, who has been the manager of Primeira Liga club Sporting CP in Lisbon, Portugal, is set to become head coach at Manchester United “subject to work visa requirements”, according to the club. Amorim has played for Primeira Liga teams Belenenses, Benfica and Braga as well as having 14 international appearances for Portugal during his footballing career.
In a statement, Manchester United said: “Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.”
Rúben Amorim will join the Manchester football club on Monday 11 November, with Ruud van Nistelrooy continuing to take charge of the team as interim coach until the Portuguese manager joins. Ruud van Nistelrooy has previously played for Manchester United between 2001 and 2006, with 219 appearances and scoring 150 goals for the team.
