This summer has been a bit of weird one for Manchester, in that we haven’t really had much of one. A handful of hot, sunny days sprinkled here and there to counteract the muggy or rainy climate, however we may be in luck… Temperatures are due to rise in Manchester this weekend, so much so that it’s predicted to be hotter than the Californian city of San Francisco!
This Sunday (August 11) in particular is expected to be pretty sunny and hot in Manchester with highs of 25ºC and lows of 17ºC, due to an increasingly hot and humid air mass being pushed mainly across the southern half of the UK. However, for those in sunny San Francisco (also referred to as ‘The Golden Gate City’) on Sunday the city is predicted to experience highs of 17ºC and lows of 12ºC meaning Manchester will be hotter than the U.S city for once. The weather there will be overcast changing to sunny intervals by late morning – sounds a bit like our usual weather here in Manchester.
According to Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Dan Suri, said: “Tropical Storm Debby in North America is helping to strengthen the jet stream, and is causing it to meander over the Atlantic. This will allow hot air to move into the UK later this weekend, and early next week.
“Temperatures are likely to reach the low 30° Celsius in places, notably in the south and southeast. Further north and west within this warm air, outbreaks of heavy showers or thunderstorms are possible. As well as the hot daytime temperatures, a very warm night is also expected on Sunday night into Monday.”
On Monday (August 12), it’s also expected to be as high as 25ºC in Manchester and still continuing to be hotter than San Francisco with highs of 17ºC. But like any good thing, it doesn’t last for long as the Met Office says “the hot air mass will likely become displaced by fresher conditions” by Tuesday with the weather becoming “unsettled once again”.
So don’t pack away your flip-flops, shorts and sunglasses just yet! It might not be as hot as European climes with over-heating happening right now, but still slap on the SPF and enjoy the weather whilst you can – it might even call for a trip to the beach!
