From a hunting lodge to a country house there’s 600 years of history hidden at Lyme Park, and at this time of year, what better place to visit for some Christmas joy? Not only is Lyme a beautiful part of Stockport, just an hour from Manchester city centre, but the manor house was actually used as Pemberley in the BBC’s 1995 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice – yes, the Colin Firth one.
Christmas at Lyme Park starts with a bang as the carnival comes to the house. Step into Lyme House where Christmas has been interrupted by an animal takeover – seeking refuge from extreme rain, the house becomes home to magnificent and unusual beasts with ‘Animal Crackers Christmas‘, an imaginary world where animals have taken over the building.
In this quirky installation, families can walk from room to room looking out for a host of festive creatures and collect any miss-laid eggs, relax with cows and enjoy karaoke with badgers. At the same time, take in the beautiful traditional Christmas decorations inside the house, and for the first time, the house will be open every day from December 1 to December 24, from 11am to 3pm. Admission to the event is free – although admission charges apply for the venue.
Join in with some Christmas carols in the Timber Yard and you’ll feel jolly in no time. It’s the most wonderful time of the year to get together with your friends and family and sing to your heart’s content. And why not pick up a hot chocolate from the café while you’re there? Pop along in the afternoon between December 16 and 24 and go wild on the festive cheer! The performance on Sunday 24 December will take place in the courtyard at the House, as a special Christmas Eve treat.
Wrap up warm and explore the garden or head out to the wider estate for walks through woodland and across the moorland for far-reaching views. With over 1,400 acres to enjoy there is something for all ages and abilities – head into the garden for accessible paths perfect for wheelchairs and buggies.
After stretching your legs and exploring the vast estate, refuel with a warming drink and slice of cake in one of Lyme’s cafés, where there’s something for everyone, or enjoy a festive treat at Lyme this Christmas with a Festive Afternoon Tea in the Servants’ Hall, Monday – Friday throughout December.
What’s more, you can escape the high street and do your Christmas shopping at Lyme. Whether it’s environmentally-friendly swaps for a more sustainable life, a gift for a loved one or an indulgence for yourself, you’re bound to find the perfect gift.
