Theatre may have ground to a complete halt during the pandemic, with many fearing for the future of the industry, but our favourite shows are gradually returning to the stage – including Disney’s hit Lion King musical, which has now just announced a string of extra dates, extending its autumn run into the spring of 2023. With this announcement of an extension, it makes it one of the longest-running shows in recent Manchester theatre history.
Announcing its grand return just last summer, the beloved production – which has been running since 1997 – has finally come to Manchester as part of a brand new residency, after its 2020 UK tour was postponed as a result of the pandemic. Telling the famous story of Simba and his journey to Pride Rock in a whole new way, the show is made up of over 50 actors, dancers and singers, who’ll all be taking to the stage at Manchester’s Palace Theatre in October 2022 right up until March 2023.
Originally set to perform between October 27th 2022 – December 24th 2022, Mancs will finally be able to see the show from the low price of just £20 – with the show offering something new and exciting for the city that the whole family can enjoy. There’ll also be six extra months to enjoy the show now, too, as part of the extended run that was recently announced.
Set against the production’s unique backdrop of the Serengeti Plains, the show has racked up a whole host of rave reviews over the decades, with the likes of the New York Times and Time Magazine, to name a few, singing the production’s praises.
Since debuting back in 1997, the show has been awarded numerous awards – including six Tony’s in just one year, with over 100 million people worldwide flocking to the theatres to see the show.
