A new chapter has begun at Honister Slate Mine as England’s longest zip wire is officially open, marking the most significant new attraction at the iconic Lake District destination since the award-winning Infinity Bridge.
Stretching an incredible 1,200 metres from the dramatic heights of Honister Crag to the Visitor Centre below, and reaching speeds of up to 65mph, the new attraction offers an unforgettable combination of adrenaline, breathtaking mountain scenery and industrial heritage unlike anywhere else in England.
More than 15 years in the making, the zip wire is the culmination of years of vision, determination and investment, creating an exciting new experience while supporting the future of England’s last working slate mine.
The opening also comes during a landmark year for Honister, as the business celebrates 30 years since the late Mark Weir purchased the mine, beginning its transformation into one of the country’s most distinctive heritage and adventure destinations.
While the zip wire delivers a world-class visitor experience, it has also been designed with a practical purpose. In a modern nod to Honister’s industrial past, the system will assist in transporting slate from the mountain, echoing the historic aerial ropeways that once played a vital role in the working life of the mine. It is a unique blend of heritage, engineering and innovation that reflects Honister’s continuing evolution as both a working slate mine and a leading visitor attraction.
Having taken on the leadership of the family business, brothers Prentice and Piers Wilkinson-Weir have continued to build on the foundations laid over the past three decades, investing in Honister while remaining true to its heritage. Their ambition is to ensure Honister continues to thrive as both England’s last working slate mine and one of the UK’s most unique heritage and adventure destinations.
