A wave of closures is sweeping across UK high streets in 2025, with household names and beloved local haunts shutting up shop at an alarming rate.
The closures listed are only part of a broader crisis sweeping UK high streets in 2025. According to a warning from the British Retail Consortium (BRC), as many as 400 of Britain’s largest shops including supermarkets and department stores with a rateable value over £500,000 are at risk of closure if the government pushes forward with a new, higher business rates tax band.
The BRC cites soaring employment costs, high taxes, and increasing rates bills as ongoing pressures that have already driven 1,000 such outlets to close over the past five years.
If all 400 at-risk stores went under, the BRC estimates there could be up to 100,000 job losses, while local councils would lose “well over” £100 million per year in business rates receipts.
The Consortium is now urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves to use the autumn Budget to deliver business rates reform “without simply shifting the cost onto larger stores which would be massively damaging to our high streets.” These big anchor retailers are crucial for the health of high streets and shopping centres, supporting a third of all retail workers and generating vital local footfall.
So if you can’t keep track of all the closures that have already been announced this year, here’s a run-down of stores that have shut up shop in 2025, including the likes of Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer, Iceland, Poundland, WH Smith and more.
