What could be better than a wonderfully fresh bowl of fruit? Having picked it all yourself, of course! The sun is shining here in Manchester and it’s not even officially summer yet, so we can start planning outdoor activities for the long summer holidays, with the hope that it’ll continue. Not only is fruit picking a wonderful day out for all the family, but encourages a healthy, balanced diet and educates both children and adults alike about homegrown produce and non-processed food. Here’s our guide to where to go fruit picking in and around Greater Manchester.
1. Poynton Fruit Farm, Poynton
Poynton Fruit Farm in the south of Stockport is a treasure trove for seasonal fruit, with strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, gooseberries and rhubarb all available at different points in the summer. The fruit ranges from £5 to £9 per punnet, and only 20p per stick of rhubarb, with updates on what’s in season on their Facebook page – the farm is likely to open in mid-June when the strawberries kick in.
Cool down with one of Poynton Fruit Farm’s delicious ice creams once you’ve done the hard work, and perhaps take inspiration from one customer who went home and made rhubarb crumble and blackcurrant sorbet – the fun doesn’t stop when you leave the farm!

2. Kenyon Hall Farm, Warrington

A staple all year round for visitors far and wide, Kenyon Hall Farm comes into its own around Halloween when pumpkin pickers descend on Warrington for their very own spooky gourds. The Greater Manchester farm is equally ripe in summer, though, with a dedicated fruit picking section on their website where you can see what’s in season and book a slot to go and pick your own. The website provides daily updates of the produce that’s ready to pick, and an indication as to when you’ll be able to book for picking – at the moment there’s nothing to pick, but from early June the first strawberries and hopefully gooseberries should be ready.
The farm boasts 20 different fruits and vegetables to pick including raspberries, onions and corn on the cob, all at different times throughout the summer. Tickets aren’t required unless you’re wanting the pick strawberries, and they cost around £5 which includes one punnet, with any extra being payable by weight.

3. Mersey Vale Nature Park Community Orchard, Stockport
Mersey Vale Nature Park is a wonderful destination any day of the week, with two ponds with dipping platforms, a wildflower meadow and a traditional community-run orchard. Although fruit picking isn’t a structured activity at the Manchester orchard, the public is welcome to wander through the trees, taking in what nature has to offer, and pick fruit for themselves, free of charge.
Visitors are encouraged to help protect the natural environment by following the countryside code, which includes following signs and instructions, but the aim of the local nature reserve and Site of Biological Importance is to educate and support locals in eating healthily and understanding the importance of local produce. This is more of an informal fruit picking experience, but the wonderful damsons and traditional apples are well worth searching for.
