What’s not to love about the humble chip? Crispy exterior, fluffy interior – it is quite possibly the best way to eat a potato. However, a new stall in Manchester, known as Frite, is shaking things up when it comes to chips by specialising in loaded fries, or frites, reminiscent of those you may try on a trip to Amsterdam.
In the Dutch city, you can pick up a cone or tray of hot, crispy, salty fries at almost every turn. But instead of dousing thick-cut chips with salt and vinegar, chip shop gravy or curry sauce like we may do up North, the Dutch slather their thin and crispy frites with the likes of mayonnaise or a curry-flavoured ‘joppie sauce’ – when in Rome Amsterdam, eh?
However, you needn’t have to hop on a flight to get a taste of those moreish fries as Mancs can now pick up a tray of authentic Dutch fries from Frite in Manchester. From the team behind Indian restaurant, Zouk Tea Bar & Grill, Frite is located on Deansgate right next to John Ryland’s Library and fancy dining spots Sexy Fish and Australasia. And with it being bright yellow, it’s very hard not to miss.
The toppings for the loaded fries at Frites is pretty extensive and are inspired by a number of international cuisines. Choose from the likes of the US-style topped with Philly cheesesteak, Japanese-style with katsu chicken, Chinese-style with salt & pepper seasoning, or Indian, with juicy butter chicken.
Other loaded frites options include a French-style consisting of skin-on fries topped with truffle oil, parmesan cheese and truffle mayo and Mexicann-style with sweet potato frites topped with smashed avocado and chimichurri.
Served in both tub-like trays and cones depending on your appetite, the cone design are similar to those in Amsterdam. Perfect for those who prefer to go au naturel on their fries but want some flavour to accompany them, Frite in Manchester offer a cute separate section on their cones for condiments so you can dip rather than saturate sauces like truffle mayo, hot honey, buffalo, sriracha, tikka sauce, ranch, mayo or a classic Joppie sauce onto those crispy frites.
Frite is open between 11am and 9pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am to 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
