OK, our early summer has been a bit of a flop to say the least, but since it’s (touch wood) slightly improved of late, we’re looking forward to some summer activities ahead. There’s nothing more British than a spot of camping, out in the beautiful surrounds of the countryside, proving you can keep yourself not just alive, but thrive whilst you’re at it. One of the best places in Greater Manchester for camping is Dearden Wood near Bury, and it really is a fantastic offering.
Set in a beautiful 10 acres of woodland in Lancashire, Dearden Wood is the closest you can come to a truly magical getaway, short of going to Disneyland, with every tree looking as though a little fairy could be living inside, and camping amongst this magic is unforgettable.
What’s more, the Dearden plot offers not only a place to pitch your tent, but ready-made glamping options and on-site wood-fired pizza, as well as all-important shower and toilet facilities. There’s also a kitchenette space for those not up for bringing a camping stove and kettle, and campfires are available for those long summer’s evenings that require some serious marshmallow roasting and chats late into the night.
Dearden Wood Campsite is situated in woodland which was originally planted by North West Water in the 1930s. Once the site closed in the 70s, the Girl Guides secured the site as a campsite for local Guides, Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh groups. Due to the site slowly deteriorating, the local groups stopped using it and the site gradually became redundant for many years.
The Law family purchased the site in 2014 and have slowly improved the rustic facilities on site for the children and managed the woodland back to good health. Over the last four years, the campsite has been transformed and along with the assistance of Myerscough College and some local people and local businesses, the woodland is receiving the regeneration attention that it deserves.
Following a request from a local councillor, the owners applied for a licence for public camping, which was confirmed in 2019.
The site is in a beautiful and peaceful location in Edenfield, surrounded by woodlands, rivers, waterfalls and the beautiful moorlands. Edenfield hosts a local bakery, butchers, cafe and local pubs, which are all only a small walk away. Ramsbottom with its restaurants, pubs, bars, supermarkets, shops and steam train railway is only a five minute drive away.
Scout, Guide and Duke of Edinburgh groups remain Dearden Wood’s main priority, so public camping fits in around these bookings, ensuring that the site is always available for local groups to enjoy.
