The possibility of living slap bang in the middle of Manchester city centre can be pretty slim when on a budget, thus we see many moving further out of the city to nearby towns in Greater Manchester as house and rent prices rise. But where exactly is the best town in the region to commute from? According to a study by mortgage experts Pepper Money, who analysed over 67 commuter towns to find the best, one Greater Manchester spot stood out from the rest, ranking in the top 10 nationwide.
The study ranked towns across the UK based on affordability, quality of life, salaries, and commuting times, with the Greater Manchester town of Stockport named one of the best commuter towns. While Cheshire favourites like Altrincham and Wilmslow are still in demand, they however lag behind when it comes to affordability – with Stockport standing out as the smart, balanced choice for professionals and families.

Stockport shines as one of the best commuter towns
Ranking in the top 10 commuter towns nationwide, Stockport scored 294 out of 469. The town was praised for offering the shortest commute into Manchester at just 10 minutes by rail and only costing £3.30, as well as average house prices of £307,000, average rents of £1,051 and strong local salaries at £37,479 per annum.
According to Pepper Money, Stockport provides a more affordable option than many London commuter towns, while still delivering big-city connectivity. The town provides a more balanced alternative to pricier Cheshire hotspots like Altrincham (£543,385 average house price) and Wilmslow (£510,057). Residents also benefit from a quality of life score of 7.6, making it an increasingly attractive choice for professionals, families, and first-time buyers.

While commuter towns close to Sheffield (Rotherham, Dronfield and Barnsley) dominate the national ranking, Stockport holds its own as the North West’s standout option. Its proximity to Manchester, combined with competitive housing and rental markets, gives commuters access to one of the UK’s fastest-growing economies without the high costs often associated with city living.
However, Stockport was not the only Greater Manchester town to feature in the best commuter towns nationwide. Stalybridge also ranked highly in the study thanks to its house affordability (£244,877), quality of life (7.6) and commuting time (12 minutes). The town also had the second most affordable rental prices of the commuter towns featured in the top 10 nationwide, with the average rent being £923 per month.

In third place, Bolton offers the most affordable housing of the top 10 commuter towns near Manchester with average house prices of £194,000 and average rent of £804. Whilst Altrincham, in fourth place, might be more expensive to live in, it offered the cheapest rail cost into Manchester city centre at £2.30.

In contrast: how expensive is the commute to London?
By comparison, many London commuter towns ranked poorly due to soaring house prices and high rail fares. Towns like St Albans (£628,000 average house price, £1,869 monthly rent) and Guildford (£543,000 average house price, £1,637 monthly rent) offer quick connections but at a significant financial premium.
