Looks like the sunshine has already left the UK, but summer’s far from over. It’ll be back soon, I’m sure… (don’t quote me on that). Still, we Brits have learnt to embrace our holidays, whatever the weather, and nothing should stop you from booking your next getaway—especially when the UK is home to Europe’s best beaches.
Yes, really. If you’ve been busily plotting your next beach holiday, forget about France or Spain, the UK is where it’s at. Holiday rental portal, Holidu, has analysed Google Maps reviews to reveal the most beloved and beautiful beaches in Europe. And whilst the best-rated beach in Europe was Spiaggia dei Conigli (4.9 rating on Google Maps) in Italy, 2 to 5 are all within our borders.
Where are the best beaches in the UK?
In second place, Barafundle Bay Beach (4.9 rating on Google Maps) is a small, secluded bay, surrounded by dunes and pine trees, in Pembrokeshire. Golden sands and crystal waters, this often feels more like the Caribbean than the Welsh coast. Just make sure to pack carefully and considerately, as it’s a half-mile walk from the nearest car park.
Staying in Wales, third place went to Traeth Mwnt (4.9), in Ceredigion. Home to the historic Mwnt Church, overlooking the bay, the hidden cove’s sandy shores are a popular spot for both keen hikers and wildlife enthusiasts—and you may even glimpse dolphins off the coast, as well as the mountains of Snowdonia in the distance.
Moving to England for fourth place, Devon’s Woolacombe Beach (4.8) is often considered one of the most popular British beaches, attracting thousands of tourists each year. With three miles of golden sands, it’s a real holidaymaker’s beach, while the excellent wave conditions make it a surfer’s paradise in the UK too.
Finally, fifth place went to Dunraven Bay (4.8) in Glamorgan. Returning to Wales, this picturesque spot is the one if you like a little exploration in your beach trip. But you can just as easily sunbathe with a good book or go for a gentle swim as well. Whether it’s rockpooling, fossil hunting, or hiking to the ruins of Dunraven Castle, there’s plenty to discover.
