There’s something irresistibly festive about escaping to the countryside at Christmas.
Perhaps it’s the slower pace, the glowing shopfronts in cobbled market squares, or the sense that time stands still for a little while. And in the heart of the Peak District, this town captures that feeling perfectly.
The most Christmassy destination in the heart of the Peak District
Recently named one of the UK’s most Christmassy destinations, Bakewell blends postcard-perfect scenery with timeless charm – the kind of place that feels lifted straight from a festive film. Its stone cottages, twinkling lights, and independent shops selling everything from handmade gifts to freshly baked Bakewell Tarts make it a true winter wonderland.
Throughout December, Bakewell’s community spirit shines bright. The Christmas Tree Festival at Bakewell Parish Church runs from December 12 to 21, filling the 13th-century church with beautifully decorated trees, each crafted by local schools, charities, and businesses. Inside, the scent of pine mixes with candle wax and carols – a true celebration of village life at Christmas.
Although the town’s main Christmas Market lights up the centre in mid-November, the season doesn’t end there. Two stunning festive markets take place just a short drive away, both offering something completely different from grand stately splendour to historic intimacy.
Chatsworth House: A stately Christmas wonderland

Only 12 minutes from Bakewell, Chatsworth House transforms into a storybook setting in winter. This year’s theme, The Enchanted Garden, brings the house and gardens to life with creative displays, twinkling lights, and immersive storytelling.
The Chatsworth Christmas Market open until December 14 is set against the backdrop of the grand estate, featuring more than 100 stalls selling artisan gifts, festive food, and handcrafted decorations.
Visitors can browse for presents while sipping mulled wine, then step inside the Orangery or Stables shops to continue the Christmas shopping experience.
Entry to the market is free, though timed tickets are required for house visits, starting from £12 for children and £40 for adults with donation.
Christmas at the 900-year-old Haddon Hall

Just six minutes from Bakewell lies Haddon Hall, one of England’s most atmospheric historic homes. With over 900 years of history, its honey-coloured stone walls and timbered halls provide an unforgettable setting for the Mercatum Christmas Artisan Market.
Held across several long weekends from late November to mid-December, this enchanting market welcomes more than 250 producers and craftspeople. Expect stalls brimming with jewellery, ceramics, textiles, artisanal chocolate, and fine fragrance – all surrounded by candlelight, festive greenery, and roaring fireplaces.
Outside, the Lower Courtyard is transformed into a twinkling Alpine village, complete with wooden chalets and live seasonal music. It’s one of the region’s most atmospheric festive markets and a true highlight of the Peak District’s Christmas calendar.
Tickets to Haddon Hall’s Mercatum market start from £12.30 for adults and £4 for children aged 5 to 15 (free for under-4s), offering a magical experience that blends heritage and holiday cheer in equal measure.
Whether you’re wandering through Bakewell with a mince pie in hand or exploring the festive grandeur of Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, this corner of the Peak District brims with Christmas magic.
