An Asda supermarket is set to close in Hale Barns, south of Manchester, to make way for a new Waitrose store later this year. The 15,000 sq ft shop in the Altrincham area opened just over two years ago but will now close its doors on Friday 31st July.
The Hale Road Asda store, which opened in May 2024 after Booths vacated the site, will shut its doors in order to undergo a full refit.
A spokesperson for Asda said: “Like all major supermarkets, we regularly review our store estate to ensure it continues to meet customer needs and remains commercially sustainable.
“We’d like to thank our colleagues and the local community at our Hale Barns store and reassure customers they can continue to access Asda’s great value and products at our nearby Altrincham and Wythenshawe superstores, or online at asda.com.”
From Asda to Waitrose
Waitrose confirmed in May that the new store will open in Hale Barns in the autumn, with an exact date to be announced nearer the time. The retailer says it is investing £1bn in a multi-year programme to provide the very best products, service and shops for customers nationwide.
The Waitrose opening in Hale Barns will make it one of the first full-line Waitrose stores to open in eight years. Asda employees working at the Hale Barns site will become Waitrose Partners, and recruitment will take place for the additional new roles created by the opening.
ASDA Hale Barns is set to close on Friday 31st July. Waitrose Hale Barns is scheduled to open in autumn 2026 at The Square, Hale Road, Hale Barns, Altrincham, WA15 8ST.
