True Crime Fans Are Saying Netflix’s ‘The Innocent Man’ Is Better Than Making A Murderer

Two murders, four convictions and a town full of secrets.

It may not seem like an obvious Christmas hit, but people are raving about Netflix’s new true crime documentary series The Innocent Man.

The documentary series, which is based on John Grisham’s best-selling non-fiction book The Innocent Man: Murder And Injustice In A Small Town, examines two murders in the Oklahoma town of Ada in the 1980s. The first victim, 21-year-old Debra Sue ‘Debbie’ Carter was murdered in her home in 1982. And in 1984, 24-year-old convenience store worker Denice Haraway was kidnapped from her workplace.

The series features interviews with the victims’ friends and families, as well as residents, lawyers and journalists who were involved with the case. It raises troubling question around how the murders were investigated and the circumstance under which four men – Tommy Ward, Karl Fontenot, Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz – were charged.

The show arrived on Netflix on December 14, less than two months after the second series of Making A Murderer and, although the similarities between the two are obvious, some viewers have said The Innocent Man is better than its predecessor.

One viewer said: “The innocent man is better than Making a Murderer. Corruption is shocking!”

Another said: “If you loved Making A Murderer then you must watch The Innocent Man, seriously the only reason the innocent man isn’t called making a murderer is because that title was already taken.”

While another fan summed up what we’re all thinking perfectly, they said: “People need to watch The Innocent Man on Netflix…mindblowing.”

The Innocent Man is streaming on Netflix now.
