Manchester Will Be Overrun With Giant Bees This Summer

More than 100 giant bee sculptures will be winging their way across the city in July as part of a public art event celebrating Manchester’s heritage.

The Bee in the City trail will pay homage to famous elements of Manchester’s history with more than 100 sculptures of the iconic worker bee, which has symbolised the city’s energy and sense of community since the Industrial Revolution.

The super-sized sculptures, which have been sponsored by local businesses, will feature designs by Manchester-based artists that reflect the city, from music legends to the cobbles of Coronation Street.

More than 100 puntastically-titled bees will make up the trail, including the Stone Roses inspired ‘I Wanna ‘Bee’ Adored’ and the tribute to 90s Madchester ‘Hac ‘Bee’ Enda’, which will be displayed across streets, parks and public spaces throughout Manchester from July 23 – September 23.

The trail has been produced by Wild in Art, who create event trails across the world, backed by Manchester City Council and in March, Manchester City Centre was treated to a dazzling preview of this summer’s Bee in the City trail, when a six-foot golden chrome ‘Au’ bee toured key locations across the city.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:

“The bee symbolises the industrious, creative and energetic spirit of Manchester and its people. Bee in the City will build on Manchester’s reputation for innovation and the role that culture plays at the heart of city life. This accessible event will encourage Mancunians and visitors alike to explore the Bee trail next summer. It’s sure to be a memorable and enjoyable spectacle and the Council is pleased to be backing this special event.”

Sally-Ann Wilkinson, Director of Wild in Art said:

“Bee in the City will become Manchester’s buzzword, attracting many new partnerships and collaborations to create a very special event. It promises to connect, inspire, and bring huge benefit and enjoyment to all communities through the power of our city’s creativity.”

The Bees will be auctioned off in October to raise money for The Lord Mayor of Manchester’s We Love MCR Charity, which works to improve the lives and life chances of Manchester people.
