Manchester United Football Club has announced that Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. The decision to dismiss the Dutch football manager comes after Manchester United experienced a 2-1 defeat against West Ham United at the London Stadium yesterday (October 27).
Erik ten Hag was appointed as manager in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024, beating Manchester City. Ten Hag has previously managed football teams such as FC Bayern Munich II and Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax.
Commenting on Manchester United’s loss against West Ham United on Sunday, ten Hag said: “Football is not always the best team winning. Today it’s very obvious and clear. Today we were far better than the opponent and there are two things: we didn’t score and it was a very poor decision from the referee – on-field and definitely also off-field.”
In a statement, the football club said: “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Manchester United has confirmed that Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited. Ruud van Nistelrooy has previously played for Manchester United between 2001 and 2006, with 219 appearances and scoring 150 goals for the team.
Manchester United currently find themselves in 14th position in the Premier League with just three wins from their opening nine matches. The football club is also 21st of 36 teams in the Europa League table, having drawn their three opening fixtures.
Manchester United Football Club are now searching for their sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
