Trans-Pennine rail links between Manchester and West Yorkshire are set for a major transformation after the Government confirmed a new city-centre station at Bradford Interchange. The move marks a critical step forward for Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR), promising faster, more frequent, and more reliable cross-Pennine services for Greater Manchester passengers, commuters, and businesses travelling east.
Earlier this year, the Chancellor announced that £1.1 billion has been committed to support the delivery of NPR, allowing progress on planning, development, and design work of the rail line to begin.

New Bradford Interchange station and what it means for the North
Once delivered in the 2030s, the upgraded station will establish a high-capacity, turn-up-and-go rail link between Manchester, Bradford, Leeds, and York. Passengers travelling between Manchester and Bradford will see service frequencies increase to multiple trains per hour, eliminating the need to check timetables in advance and dramatically reducing journey times across the Pennines.
For Greater Manchester’s booming economy, the upgraded corridor opens up deeper commercial ties and talent exchange with West Yorkshire, unlocking access to new labour markets, supply chains, and cross-regional investment.

The new station will replace Bradford’s outdated 1970s interchange and integrate into Great British Railways (GBR), the planned publicly owned railway designed to unite track and train operations for higher reliability. Alongside local regeneration that could yield up to £1 billion in economic benefits and thousands of homes in Bradford’s Southern Gateway, the project underpins the Government’s broader Northern Growth Strategy, which focuses heavily on electrifying and upgrading the trans-Pennine routes.
“Bradford has so much untapped potential”
Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, pointed directly to the importance of the Manchester link: “Bradford has so much untapped potential, and faster, more frequent trains to Leeds and Manchester, and the transformation of the city centre through Bradford City Village, will help to finally unleash it. Together with investment for Northern Powerhouse Rail, a mass transit system for West Yorkshire and our brand-new Weaver Network, we are working in lockstep with the government to deliver a better-connected region.”

“I will be doing everything I can to push on and move forward with ambitious plans that enable future phases of Northern Powerhouse Rail.”
Henri Murison MBE, Chief Executive of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, emphasised the wider economic bridge being built between the cities: “The decision to build Bradford’s new station at the interchange in the city centre is a long-term commitment to the city and the wider North.
“Working with the council and Mayor Tracy Brabin and her team, I will be doing everything I can to push on and move forward with ambitious plans that enable future phases of Northern Powerhouse Rail. This network will better connect the young people in the city with opportunities in Manchester and Liverpool as well as Sheffield.”
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said NPR would “transform how people travel across the North”. With the green light now given to the Bradford Interchange hub, attention turns to the delivery phases of Northern Powerhouse Rail, including a new Manchester-Liverpool railway line via Manchester Airport in stage two.
